如何融合创客文化与学历教育?

[text: i.Center] Welcome to i.Center of Tsinghua. The aim of i.Center is to facilitate[text: independent thought, information sharing, innovative exploration, international exchange, industrial revolution] independent thought, information sharing, innovative exploration, international exchange and a brand new industrial revolution. In a series of educational events of i.Center, including this Tsinghua Maker Day, we are creating an incubating environment to fuse [text: hacker culture with formal education] hacker culture with formal education. As a demonstration, we invited a group of students, hackers, innovators, designers to build up this [text: M.city] M.city. [text: M] M, stands for many things. It’s our [text: Methodology] methodology, and a [text: Mixture] mixture of a few [text: Methods] Methods.

In this group of people we invited, we found that [text: dome] dome has been a most popular theme. We have [text] 3d printed dome, [text] metal pipe dome, text] acrylic one and a [text] MDF one from different parties. This is not a coincidence. [text: dome] Dome has been an eternal theme throughout human civilization. For a long time in ancient world, [image: If the earth was the center of the universe 2] the heaven under which we live, has been conceived as a giant dome. [image: If the earth was the center of the universe 3] This one is the Hebrew conception of the world. [image: Illuminatred PilgrimIllustration] Dome is a great [text: Metaphor] Metaphor for the world, and Metaphors, are essentially the foundation of our cognition. We conceived all these domes we have here as [text] independent Modular, and combined them into one story through [text: up Modular down Metaphors] layers of metaphors.

[text: instructables pavilion] The smallest dome is a design by XXXXXXX. We got it from instructables. [video: construction process of this dome] This closed and solid dome is a metaphor for our current human habitat ---- the earth. Since ancient time human beings have been living in this very limited physical domain, and moving alone defined roads and paths. For a long time it has been believed that the heaven is a [video: continue construction process of this dome] creation of an unknown but powerful existence, very much like the way the robot in this dome could have conceived the people making this dome.

最小的这个穹顶由XXXXXXX设计,来自instructables。这个封闭的实体球形是对我们人类居住环境——地球的隐喻。在古代人类只能居住在非常有限的物理区域内,用个体的活动行为定义了道路。因此长久以来,人们都设想天是由某种未知但强大的造物主的创造出来的。人类对天的设想,现在穹顶下活动的机器人对创造这些机器人的人的设想,是非常类似的。

As human civilization approached [text: Modernization] Modernization, we had skepticism on that unknown being and develop [image: Louis Boullée's Cenotaph for Newton] science to explain the universe. This is a monument for Newton in the form of giant dome, designed by Boullée. We developed technology to [image: 生态圈2号]simulate the nature. Like this experiment, [image: Bucky Fuller's dome over New York City 1] and even this crazy proposal by Buckminster Fuller to cover the whole city of New York. [image: geodesic dome, still needed] Geodesic dome was an ambitious idea for human habitat. [text: Modernity]This is modernity. This transparency in [video: NO.4 HS working process] structural logic represents human ideology of the time. This metal pipe dome was designed and built by students from No.4 High school with instruction and help of Tsinghua professor and students in School of architecture.

人类文明走近现代化,人们终于对于那位未知的造物主有所怀疑,并且开始用科学的方式去探索宇宙。这是艾蒂安·路易·布雷设计的牛顿纪念碑。我们应用科技去模拟自然的运行方式,比如生态圈2号实验;甚至有了巴克敏斯特·富勒想要用一个穹顶将整个纽约罩起来的疯狂提案,网格穹顶是对人类生存环境的一个非常有雄心的想法。这是现代(Modernity)的认知。这个透明的结构网格穹顶就是现代认知的展现,它是一个金属杆件的穹顶,由北京四中的同学们设计并建造完成,清华大学建筑学院的教授和学生指导协助。

Now, the question is, what is next after [text: next after Modernity?] modernity? Before we go further into this question. Let’s take a look at the third dome by [image: logo of DeFacto] DeFacto. [video: construction process of this dome] This Hive dome is a lightweight, low-cost and easily assembled structure. Utilizing standardized wood members and custom 3d printed connectors HIVE aims at maximizing material efficiency by doing more with less. This HIVE dome opens up and in the same time incorporates various new possibilities.

现在问题来了,现代之后又是什么?进一步讨论这个问题以前,我们先来看一下第三个穹顶,来自DeFacto。这个蜂巢穹顶是一个轻质量、低成本、易组装的结构体系。充分利用了标准长度的木杆件和定制3D打印的连接件的结合优势,最大化的提高了材料的利用效率,用最少的东西带来最大的成果。这个蜂巢穹顶开启并融合了各种新的可能性。

We invited [image: logo of Microduino] Microduino and 四维拓智to install [video: test of Microduino robots in 410 room] robots ... and [video: test of embedded by Ray in i.Center] embedded systems on the pavilion. We installed [video: sample video taken by these cameras] cameras tracking the moving robot. As long as the robot is in the range of the camera lens, the camera will rotate to place the robot in the center of the video view. Another embedded system are [video: a video shows how the lights light up when human approach] the human body infrared senses which could light up lights or make sounds. The robot that run on the track follows the black line. With this dome added to our system, we expand our [text: Vision and Metaphor] vision and metaphor to the scale of universe. These embedded systems are like satellites, sensing things happening in distance. The base structure is a flexible panel system developed by PACEE. Again, it is very [text: Modular] modular and we can use it to make various structure.

So in the [text: Future] future, in the context of such universe, what is possible for our earth to evolve? We have our final dome as a [text: Metaphor] metaphor for this emerging future. This is an [text: Evolution] evolution from [image: instructables page] this open-sourced pavilion, as we mentioned before. The designer of this new dome, Zimmer Barns, developed a very fascinating system based on this dome. [image: Arduino elements and logo] Arduino system is applied to facilitate the growing and cultivation of the plants. This dome present our vision for the coming future: symbiosis of [text: Silicon and Carbon] silicon-based creature and carbon-based creature.

所以对于未来,经过了这样的宇宙认知发展过程后,地球会如何进化?我们用最后一个穹顶表达对未来的隐喻。它从这个开源的穹顶中进化而来。新的穹顶的设计者是Zimmer Barns,他为这个穹顶设计了非常有趣的系统,用Arduino系统完成植物的耕作,促进植物的生长。这个穹顶展现了我们对于未来的展望:硅基生物和碳基生物的共生发展。

Above is the story of our project. The four domes and the other structure and embedded system are all based on one key word that we have been mentioning all the time: [text: Modular] Modular. The whole process of fusing these different systems are based on a few coordination tools. The most important one is [text: Mediawiki] Mediawiki, which is our third M in [text: Mediawiki M.city] M city. We asked all the contributors [image: quick slides of 5-10 pages on Mediawiki] to keep updating their design information. We offered a template as a standard working flow for everyone: [text] CN(customer needs) – FR(functional requirements) – DP(design parameters) – PV(parameter valuables). [video: microduino test in 410 office] We took photos and videos as demonstration of progress.

以上是关于项目的完整故事线。四个穹顶、其他的结构装置和嵌入式系统,全部都基于统一个关键词,也是今天一直在强调的:模块化(Modular)。为了将这些不同系统的融合起来,需要新的协作工具。其中最重要的工具就是——Mediawiki,M城市中的第三个M。我们要求所有的创作团体都不断更新他们的设计信息,并提供了一个标准模板:CN(客户诉求) – FR(功能需要) – DP(设计参数) – PV(过程变量),同时拍摄照片和录像作为成果展示。

This working flow is part of [image: diagram of XLP] our XLP methodology. We will go further into this diagram later. We also use [image: logos] github and teambition for coordination. These media for cyber physical interaction are great tools that emerged in the past decades. As an effort to discover what happened in recent 30 years, we designed a second installation, “innovation engines”, to visually show the important events and institutes that promote global innovation. Innovation engines. This is a metaphor. [video: the performing of the jet engine] However we do have real engine made by students from Nanjing Institute of Technology. [video: assembling process of the jet engine] We even have their video of the assembling process. This is hardly possible without the new media promoted by those innovation engines. Utilizing [text: Mediawiki] mediawiki and other tools, we were able to [video: Power Tech teaching video] incorporate students and hackers in and outside Tsinghua to contribute to our knowledge repository. 创新引擎,这是一个隐喻。但这里也有真实的引擎,由南京工程学院的同学们设计和制造的涡轮机,甚至有他们组装过程的视频录像。如果没有这些被创新引擎推动着的媒介工具,这几乎是不可能完成的。通过Mediawiki等工具的高效使用,学生与清华校园以外的创客们能够充分合作,一起丰富我们的知识库。职业学院的同学们已经加入进来。

The next step we take is apply the next [text: M] M, [text: Mathematics] Mathematics tools to transform linguistic and physical information into cyber data flow. With the aid of Mathematics tools like [text: category theory] category theory, [pptslide: 20151126 metaphor modular and mathematics.pptx ] Modularization creates packages of complex information with simple naming, and Metaphors construct syntax trees of information flow. In this way we create the foundation of group knowledge repository for anyone in the world to freely recombine existing modular systems and create new possibilities. This is another interpretation of [text: (left) innovation (right) iteration (down) i.Center] i.Center.

所有的信息都被数字化,创造了团队项目中群体意识数据分析的可能性。这是认识过程的基础。接下来我们会应用下一个M,数学(Mathematics)工具,将语言信息和物理信息转发为电子数据。在范畴论等数学工具的帮助下,模块化可以从复杂信息中创建简单的命名包,隐喻则在信息流中构建语法树。这样我们就建立了群体知识库的基础,世界上的任何人都可以自由的重组现有的模块化系统,并创造新的可能性。创新产生于全球范围内知识的迭代,这是i.Center的另一种诠释。

As the theme of this event shows, [image: diagram of XLP, high lighting this] fusing hacker culture and formal education is one of our goal. Our methods are presented in [high lighting this] four forces’ structure and the [high lighting this] work flow. Our sandbox and installation are experiments, for now, but we believe that soon, these way of learning and creation will become our new social paradigm.

最后,让我们回到这张XLP方法论的图表。作为今天活动的主题,融合创客文化和学历教育是我们的重要目标。具体的方法通过四力结构和工作流程图展现。现在,这些沙盘和装置还只是一些实验;但相信在不久的将来,这些学习和创造的方法将会成为全国性的学习模式。
